CANICULAR

About Canicular

Our Mission

Canicular was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help people everywhere stay cool, comfortable, and safe in the heat, through approachable guidance and free tools that make reading the heat index, gauging humidity comfort, checking the UV index, and converting temperatures clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.

We believe that everyone facing the dog days of summer, from first-time heatwave dwellers to seasoned desert residents, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing weather data and confident, well-informed decisions about cooling gear and heat safety, humidity and thermal comfort, sun protection and hydration, indoor and outdoor cooling, hidden heat risks, and staying cool smart.

Through our free collection of tools, we help people make informed decisions about heat index and "feels like" temperatures, humidity comfort, UV exposure, temperature conversions, sunrise and sunset times, and the dog days of summer. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of hot weather, heatwaves, and keeping cool, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Heat & the Elements museum, with galleries on the sun and sky, extreme heat and weather, ways to cool down, and life in hot climates.

Our Story

Canicular emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with a heatwave, staying comfortable indoors and out, and making the most of a scorching summer.

Staying cool relies heavily on common sense and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident, heat-savvy person also benefits from clear answers about how hot it really feels, how humidity affects comfort, how strong the sun is today, what a reading converts to in another unit, and when the sun rises and sets. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched heat and weather knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions on the hottest days.

Our team began developing tools that we wished existed during our first brutal heatwaves. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when judging the heat index, planning hydration, or protecting skin from the sun. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted meteorological and heat-safety practice.

Today, Canicular serves active users worldwide, from first-time heatwave dwellers to lifelong hot-climate residents. Our tools have helped people read the heat index, gauge humidity comfort, check UV exposure, convert temperatures, track sunrise and sunset, and make more deliberate, confident decisions about staying cool.

Our Core Values

Our Expertise

Canicular’s tools and guides are developed and maintained by a team with extensive experience with heat and hot weather across multiple areas:

Our team includes experienced hot-climate residents, weather watchers, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult authoritative references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practices. Our content is general informational and educational content, NOT professional medical, safety, or weather advice; results vary — in extreme heat or a medical emergency, always seek professional help and follow official heat advisories from sources like the National Weather Service.

Looking Forward

The future of beating the heat lies in the intelligent combination of common sense and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At Canicular, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.

Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for heat-index estimating, humidity comfort, UV tracking, and temperature conversion. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of hot-weather dwellers better, and developing specialized guidance for different climates, heat events, and ways of staying cool more deliberately.

Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical heat and weather tools regardless of their location.
