What is dew point, and why does it matter more than humidity?

Dew point is the temperature to which air must cool for its moisture to condense — an absolute measure of how much water vapour the air holds. Relative humidity, by contrast, is relative to temperature and can mislead: 60% humidity on a cool morning feels fine, while 60% on a hot afternoon feels oppressive. Because dew point doesn't shift with temperature, it's the better single gauge of how muggy the air actually feels.

How is the dew point calculated here?

This tool uses the Magnus formula, a well-established meteorological approximation, to derive the dew point in Celsius from the air temperature and relative humidity you enter. It then maps that dew point onto a comfort scale.

What do the comfort levels mean?

By dew point: below 10°C feels Dry; 10–15°C is Comfortable; 16–18°C is Slightly Humid; 19–21°C is Humid; 22–24°C is Very Humid; and 25°C or above is Oppressive. Once the dew point climbs past about 18°C, sweat evaporates poorly and the air starts to feel sticky and draining — the point where a dehumidifier, air conditioning, or a fan really helps.
