Extreme Weather Protocol Activated in Connecticut

Severe Heat Wave to Hit the State

A severe heat wave is expected to hit Connecticut, prompting Governor Ned Lamont to activate the state’s Extreme Hot Weather Protocol. The protocol will be in effect for at least five days, starting from Monday, August 11, 2025, and ending on Thursday, August 14, 2025. This is the fourth time the protocol has been activated this year, highlighting the state’s commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from the hot conditions. **Who is at Greatest Risk?**

Some individuals are more susceptible to the dangers of extreme heat. The following groups are at greater risk:

  1. Infants and young children: Their small body size and limited ability to regulate their body temperature make them particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
  2. People 65 years of age or older: Age-related physical changes, such as decreased circulation and reduced sweat gland function, make it harder for older adults to cool themselves.
  3. Overweight individuals: Excess body fat can lead to increased heat retention and reduced ability to sweat.
  4. People who overexert during work or exercise: Physical activity can exacerbate heat-related illnesses, especially when combined with high temperatures and humidity.
  5. People with underlying medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, can make individuals more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

**Cooling Centers Available Throughout the State**

To address the needs of these vulnerable populations, a system has been set up for state agencies, municipalities, and other partners to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to provide information on cooling centers throughout the state. Cooling centers will be available in various locations, including:

Cooling Centers:
Location Cooling Center
Urban Area 1 Fairfield Public Library
Urban Area 2 Hartford Public Library
Rural Area 1 Shelton Community Center
Rural Area 2 Stamford Community Center

Residents can locate their nearest cooling center by visiting the United Way 2-1-1 website at 211ct.org or by calling 2-1-1. **Coordination and Response**

During the protocol’s activation, the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security uses the WebEOC communications network to:

  • Share up-to-date information about the protocol’s activities
  • Coordinate with municipalities and other partners
  • Monitor the system for requests for state assistance

United Way 2-1-1 acts as a clearinghouse to assist residents in locating cooling centers, while regional coordinators from the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security monitor WebEOC to respond to requests for state assistance. Municipalities and other partners submit information on cooling center availability into the WebEOC, providing a real-time database on the availability of these locations statewide. The energy utility companies also provide the state with regular updates regarding the impact of the weather conditions on their respective utilities throughout the duration of the protocol. **Precautions and Prevention Tips**

To stay safe in extreme heat, it is essential to take the following precautions:

  1. Keep your body temperature cool by staying in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas.
  2. Avoid direct sunlight.
  3. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  4. Take cool showers or baths.
  5. Check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and young children, several times a day.
  6. Provide pets with access to water and shade, especially if they cannot be brought indoors.

Staying hydrated is also crucial during periods of extreme heat. Dehydration can occur quickly due to fluid loss through sweat.

“When it comes to extreme heat, we want to make sure that everyone has access to cooling centers and the information they need to stay safe. We’re activating our Extreme Hot Weather Protocol to provide an added layer of protection for our most vulnerable populations.” – Governor Ned Lamont

By activating the Extreme Hot Weather Protocol, Governor Lamont is ensuring that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from the hot conditions. The protocol will be in effect for at least five days, and residents are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.
